Empowering and connecting parents and carers

About the Workshops

The course consists of six face to face modules. Each approximately 1 hour and looks at:

  • Dealing with challenging behaviour

  • Specialised communication skills

  • Avoiding traps that may maintain the disorder

  • Supporting recovery

Session One

INTRODUCTIONS, GROUND RULES

In the first session we lay the ground rules and look at how ready you and your loved are to change. "The Readiness Ruler"

We also look at self care. This is a strong focus throughout the course. As we all know, often looking after someone with an eating disorder is all consuming, with you the carer often forgetting about yourself and your wellbeing. In this course we look at the importance of looking after yourself.

“Put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others”

Session Two

ANIMAL METAPHORS

This session focuses on The New Maudsley Approach Animal Metaphors. What kind of animal are you?

This is a lighthearted yet powerful way of looking at how carers instinctive reactions to the eating disorder are not always helpful and can lead to inadvertently accommodating the illness.

In this session we will discuss all the animal metaphors, see who you or your loved one identifies with and look at the possible pitfalls of these reactions.

Session Three

THE CYCLE OF CHANGE

Within this session we look at how the road to recovery is not a straightforward one... three steps forward, two steps back.

We focus on all the different stages and look at where you are on that road and where you think your loved one is.

We look at how difficult it is to move from one stage to the next, and how we can help your loved ones get to their end goal.

Session Four

RECLAIMING CORE FAMILY VALUES

We all know that when a loved one becomes poorly with an eating disorder it affects the whole family, siblings, parents, grandparents, friends, etc.

In this session we look at how to reclaim some of the core family values that may have gone since the eating disorder entered the household. How to cope with situations that are alien to us. We focus on support networks and the importance of them, and again on selfcare.

Session Five

MOTIVATIONAL LANGUAGE

Motivational language helps when there are mixed thoughts about change. By using certain language it can help move closer to change.

The basic principal of motivational language is the style of warmth and empathy improving self esteem.

Session Six

REFLECTIONS

This session is very much lead by you, the carer.

We look at what we have learned, and what we can takeaway. We look at moving forward and look at any future sessions that might be helpful.

Price

£120 per course which consists of 6 bi-weekly sessions, approximately 1.5 hours per session

£30 per hour for individual sessions

Background & Aim

The Maudsley Hospital, the leading eating disorder inpatient and research centre in the UK, recognises that family/carers are in a unique position to support their loved one to tackle the eating disorder, but are typically excluded from treatment, with the impact of EDs on family often overlooked. These workshops are based on Janet Treasure's highly respected book for carers and are designed to provide carers with the practical advice and support that is so often requested. Jenny Langley was involved in the pilot of these workshops in Cambridge in 2010 and has since developed the workshops, now with workbooks, to maximise the benefits for carers and their families and then went to train other carers and professionals to be facilitators to deliver these workshops.

The New Maudsley Method is used worldwide to help families affected by eating disorders and advocates including carers at every stage of the recovery process. These workshops are based on Janet Treasures highly respected book - Skills Based Caring for a Loved One with an Eating Disorder and are designed to provide carers with practical advice and support. The aim of the workshops being to equip carers with some skills to enable them to have a positive impact on their loved one’s recovery. Focusing very much on recovery and the importance of self -care.

One to One Sessions

It is not always easy to talk in a group, even with people who are in a similar situation to your own , As everyone's situation is unique, within these sessions we would look at where your loved is on their road to recovery, the problems you are facing and how to deal with them. So if you would feel more comfortable having some sessions on a one to one basis, please let me know.
